It doesn't have to be anything fancy, just something I could use as a small visual demo of what could be interpreted as something being "alive" and then "dead" - cuteness would get bonus points.

The distinction between artificial and organic life has become so blurred, that we now need terms to define hybrid forms of life, both artificial/electronic and organic. For example, look at the recent hybrid cellborg discovery.

Ravi Saraf, a University of Nebraska chemical engineer created a hybrid sensor which incorporates microorganisms into an electronic device, fully merging microbe and machine for the first time. The breakthrough is the first "cellborg" in what might become an array of devices.

The bioelectronic device swells and contracts in response to how much water vapor is in the air. It’s called a cellborg humidity sensor, and it is at least four times more sensitive than those that are solely electronic. It even works even when its biological parts are long dead.

In the past, researchers have programmed bacteria to behave like biological computers or created electronic circuits that respond to glowing bacteria as a way to detect chemicals, but in those cases, the line separating microbe and machine was still distinct.

The study was detailed in the Oct. 21 issue of the journal Angewandte Chemie.
From an article by Ker Than of LiveScience...

On this virtual machine were seeded a number of programs written in "assembly" language (I'm not sure what language the programs were really expressed in, probbably C but I dunno). The programs would all try to copy themselves into as much memory space as they could. Over time certain programs thrived while others disappeared, and you could introduce mutations from time to time. It had a simple but highly entertaining graphical representation where you could watch the programs battle it out in an epic mortal struggle. The site is here: http://www.his.atr.jp/~ray/tierra/ -- but from the looks of it it's been abandoned.

I've been checking out Avida from the Cal Tech Digital Life Lab which seems really cool. I'm wondering what other programs may be out there though. I'm most interested in programs that simulate life at the micro as well as the macro level, and evolutiononary processes. I do understand abstraction like avida uses, i.e. I don't necessarily need a program that say has instructions that actually look like DNA, only intructions that can be formally similar in all the important respects--like Avida.

Newbie here. I've been giving a-life cursory thoughts for a couple years now, but have never actually programmed anything. I'm reading Richard Dawkin's "The Selfish Gene", juxtaposed with Douglas Hoffstadter's "Metamagical Themas" and the spirit of the two put together got me to thinking about it more lately.

Here's my question:

With software a-life, how does one simulate random mutations/inversions/recombinations/etc. in the code for the a-life without putting too many restrictions on the possibilities in order to avoid errors. What I mean is that if the "genes" are just code, it seems you would have to regulate the nature of the mutations so as to avoid instructions that would mess up the flow of program execution, e.g. a mutation that in effect makes a JUMP instruction outside of the program causing all hell to break loose. Of course there are ways you could prevent this, but spelling out the "allowed" mutations seems contrary to the spirit of a-life. What kind of solutions are there for for this?

The reason i belive this is a bot is as soon as i said no there was a link on the im screen to a rather pornographic profile. Later i couldnt find that profile it was just gone. Any thoughts?
